Tell us about your business.

ACT is an incorporated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, but we still run like any other business in many ways. The mission of Altoona Community Theatre is to produce quality live theatre that is entertaining and intellectually stimulating; to provide an avocational outlet for area residents to express themselves creatively in all facets of the theatre arts; to foster appreciation for the theatre arts throughout the community, through educational and other programming.


How did your business get started?
Since we were incorporated in 1948 from remnants of other “little theatre” troupes, we have become the resident theatre company of the historic Mishler Theatre. Since 1983 we’ve operated out of our permanent home: the old Elks building behind the Mishler, next to Tom & Joe’s diner. Thirty years ago we began offering Summer Drama Camps for Children and Teens, which we still operate each year. In 2006 we presented the first ever Isaac Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre, which has grown to participation by 20 local high schools and annual scholarship awards totaling over $50,000. What is it about your business that makes it unique?
Most of the hard work it takes to produce our shows is done on a volunteer basis. Our dedicated and talented members work diligently on every step of producing live theatre, from leadership and oversight, to casting and directing, to designing and constructing the sets, props, and costumes you see onstage, to those who literally raise and lower the curtain. We do it out of a love of theatre and a love of our community. Through ACT, some of us have met out spouses, and lifelong friends–all while challenging ourselves to often step outside our comfort zones, grow our skills and knowledge, and rise above our differences to collaborate on a shared labor of love.

What do you see for your business in the future?
We hope to adapt and grow with our community, to continue to provide quality live theatre for the next 71 years!


Do you have any special events coming up that you would like to share?
ACT is proud to present the second half of our 2018-19 season: “Peter and the Starcatcher” (Feb. 14-17) and “Mamma Mia!” (May 2-5.) Tickets are available 24 hours a day at mishlertheatre.org.

Is there anything else you would like to add and share about your business?
We love our members! But we all have other commitments. We cannot produce plays and musicals without constantly recruiting new members, to do everything from fundraising, to loading in and striking sets, to playing onstage, and more!
